The empty facilities of »Wagenfabrik
Konrad Hoerger« (also coachmakers) were brought to life
again by repairing automobiles. Soon enough they started building
cabs, delivery vans, trucks, convertibles
and occasionally even ambulances.
After the war, they had to start all over again.
Step by step modern factory facilities for efficient production
were erected in the outskirts of Lorch. This is the location
where modern ambulance and rescue vehicles are developed and manufactured
which have earned the company its world-wide reputation.
In the years between 1945 and 1955 BINZ built
large numbers of driver cabins for Daimler,
Krupp, Steyr and Gutbrod. Standard production often exceeded 10.000
units of delivery and box vans. This
took place way before the large automobile companies launched
their own versions on the market.
But they also specialized in custom made small
series and the handling of individual orders which is the only
way of knowing what the customers really wants: Cabs,
for instance - on Mercedes-Benz chassis’ - with seven seats and
upholstery made of leather and a partition wall firmly installed
with sliding panes. Or - during the fifties - there was the roadster
- elegantly styled and marveled at. The world’s unique Mercedes
Benz 300 station wagon turned out an
even greater sensation. The tradition of BINZ stretch
limousines and pick-ups reaches
back into those days. In 1954 the city scooter
was a short lived venture of BINZ into the world of two-wheelers.
A few years later the BMW
V8 was the basis for an ambulance of the especially elegant
kind.
While other coachbuilders still used metal sheeted wood frameworks,
BINZ progressed, as they always did, to all-steel coaches. Thus
in 1955 the first Mercedes type 180 ambulances
were built. BINZ had 150 employees then
and produced this ambulance in large numbers
but not only for the transport of the sick.
Already then they were exported in all four
corners of the world and the world’s appreciation
rolled back to BINZ.
Soon it became obvious that standard interior lengths were no
longer sufficient to meet with the progress in the medical field.
BINZ engineers developed an ambulance stretched
by 650 mm fitting the W 110 chassis.
Working closely together with »rescue
pros« a wide range of top technology
products for ambulance and rescue systems was developed. This
is true not only for civilian but also for military
medical services. Creativity and proper planning resulted
in new and improved products. BINZ Ambulance is a must for specialists
and quite a number of BINZ patented developments
are regular equipment of rescue services. The BINZ Quick Set,
BINZ Thermo box, BINZ Hydropneumatic resting of patients are just
a few examples of the »legendary BINZ innovative creativity«
(»Hospital Technology« 9/86)
After the »Wall« came down in 1991,
a second location was established in Ilmenau
/Thuringia. Ilmenau enlarges the product range by equipment
for mobile systems like medical technology, environmental technology,
fire- and disaster protection.
BINZ Ambulance’ broad experience of 60 years
of special purpose coach building is fully made available to their
customers. Their achievements are a good basis to confidently
look into the future and at the same time a motivation to keep
on striving for perfection.
